The story
Restaurant de Monnikendam occupies a 17th-century building on the edge of Amersfoort’s old town, overlooking the canal and a monastery garden. Inside, the atmosphere is intimate and unhurried – a place where chef Richard Veld’s kitchen takes centre stage.
Veld composes surprise menus of four, five or six courses, blending classical French techniques with modern flavours. The menu changes regularly, shaped by close collaboration with suppliers who deliver the best daily produce. The result is a contemporary French and international cuisine that feels both refined and personal. Wine pairings are available in whole or half glasses, chosen to complement each course.
The restaurant’s Michelin Recommended status for 2026 reflects this dedication to quality and hospitality. The team describes their service as “professional but above all warm and personal” – a tone that sets the evening’s pace.
Beyond the main dining room, De Monnikendam offers private spaces for special occasions. The Serre seats 13 to 24 guests, while the Riddertoren (up to 8) and the Watertoren (8 to 12) provide secluded tower rooms for lunch or dinner. These are popular for business meetings, celebrations, and private parties.
During warmer months, the terrace along the canal opens for a relaxed lunch or dinner, with views of the adjacent monastery garden.
The kitchen works with seasonal, fresh ingredients and accommodates most dietary needs – including vegetarian – when advised at the time of booking. A fully vegan menu is not possible, and the restaurant notes that traces of allergens cannot be excluded.
De Monnikendam is open for lunch from Thursday to Sunday, and dinner from Thursday to Monday. The restaurant closes between 17:00 and 18:00 for a short break.
A Michelin Recommended restaurant in Amersfoort, De Monnikendam delivers a confident, modern interpretation of French-international fine dining, with understated elegance and a genuine welcome.
