The story

Brasserie Marie Amsterdam | Classic French Dining on the Amstel

The Kitchen and Its Traditions

Brasserie Marie introduces a refined French cuisine to the heart of Amsterdam, anchoring its menu in classic French cooking methods. The kitchen focuses on seasonal ingredients prepared with straightforward precision rather than unnecessary complexity. Recent Lekker500 recognition highlights how the team maintains these standards while adapting to local expectations. You will find their signature vol-au-vent crafted with crisp pastry shells filled with Belper Knolle, roasted vegetables, and a rich Comté sauce.

Plates That Define the Table

The menu balances light starters with substantial mains, allowing guests to build a meal at their own pace. Poached eggs served with beurre blanc and tempura courgette provide a gentle introduction before moving to barbecued langoustines dressed in a garlic and anchovy bagna cauda. For those preferring seafood, the sole arrives paired with lobster and a smoked chorizo bisque, while lamb features alongside kohlrabi and shaved bone marrow. Each dish relies on clear flavor layering rather than heavy garnishes.

The Setting and the Cellar

Dining unfolds beneath an art deco stained glass ceiling that catches the light above a fishbone parquet floor. Large windows frame the Amstel River, where boats pass regularly during warmer months and guide the evening breeze onto the terrace. The space retains the relaxed energy of a traditional brasserie while accommodating both quiet lunches and celebratory dinners. Beneath the main dining room lies a wine cellar established in 1915, holding more than twelve hundred labels that complement the regional pairings available throughout the year.

Let's start with the restaurant's strongest asset: its location. The view of the Amstel is fantastic, and especially on summer days, there is a constant stream of boats sailing past. In terms of decor, it is fitting to compare it to a Parisian brasserie: a herringbone parquet floor, almost classical artwork on the walls. The ceiling features an art deco-style stained glass panel that serves as a true eye-catcher. Marie's kitchen also follows the tradition of Parisian bistros and brasseries: classic French. The menu features timeless classics such as oysters, seafood platters, caviar, country terrine, veal tartare, and entrecôte. We order two half-portions as starters, and both are excellent: poached Marigold egg with beurre blanc, green and yellow baby courgettes, green asparagus, and courgette tempura, as opposed to BBQ langoustines grilled with bagna cauda, a dipping sauce made from anchovies, garlic, and olive oil. One of the main courses is a classic vol-au-vent: a delicious crispy puff pastry pie filled with Belper Knolle, eggplant, celery root, peas, and fennel, served with a Comté sauce. Overall, it is a flavorful but quite hearty dish due to the use of both cheeses. The service is friendly, but inconsistent in terms of skill level and culinary expertise. More detailed explanations regarding the dishes would be welcome. That would make Marie perfect. Welcome to Lekker.
