The story
At Fa. Pekelhaaring on Van Woustraat, the philosophy is simple: "our instinctive drive for everything real has brought us here." Brothers Matthias and Lennard van der Nagel have created a space where good, honest food comes first—generous, full of character, and rooted in Italian tradition but never limited by it.
The kitchen follows ingredients, not dogma. Chefs add unexpected twists and a distinctly local touch, shaping dishes that feel both familiar and surprising. The atmosphere is relaxed, but every plate shows careful attention. "No fuss, just honest food prepared with care," as the team puts it.
The menu starts with snacks like arancini with pimento mayonnaise and oysters by the half-dozen, then moves to antipasti such as mozzarella with strawberries, tomato vinaigrette, elderflower, and mustard seed, or a crudo of sea bream with ginger vinaigrette and Cape gooseberry. Primi (first courses) feature linguine with lobster, bisque, and samphire; gnocchi with taleggio foam and wild garlic butter; and pappardelle with lamb stew, gremolata, and preserved lemon. Secondi (mains) include a tagliata di manzo grilled over charcoal with rocket and parmesan, or braised rabbit shoulder with fennel sausage and piperade. Desserts range from a white chocolate cheesecake with raspberry sauce to an almond-olive oil cake with buttermilk quark and chocolate ice cream.
Firma Pekelhaaring earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026, a testament to its commitment to quality, value, and straightforward Italian cuisine in Amsterdam. The wine list, available separately, is designed to match the menu's bold, seasonal flavors.
Whether for lunch or dinner Tuesday through Sunday, this De Pijp restaurant delivers a dining experience that feels effortless and genuine—exactly as it should be.
