The story
On the Jan Pieter Heijestraat in Amsterdam, Gitane is a café-restaurant that welcomes guests from breakfast through dinner and beyond. The space offers a bar, a terrace, and a dining room, making it suitable for anything from a quick bite to a leisurely, extended meal. It is open every day, for every moment of the day.
Chef and owner Angelo Kremmydas leads the kitchen, cooking with fresh, seasonal products. The menu is a small, refined selection of contemporary à la carte dishes. Kremmydas’s Mediterranean roots are present in the cooking, but the menu is described as a mix of cultures and flavors, avoiding rigid categories. There are no set menus; guests order according to their needs and cravings.
This approach, emphasizing quality and value, earned Gitane a Michelin Bib Gourmand award. The wine list is extensive, with a particular focus on natural wines, described as “gems.” The restaurant’s relaxed, all-day format and refined cooking make it a versatile spot in Amsterdam’s Oud-West neighborhood.
