The story
Het Broeker Huis brings honest Dutch cooking to Broek in Waterland, just fifteen minutes from Amsterdam. The restaurant occupies a monumental building that has served as the village's meeting place since 1775. Neeltje Pater bequeathed the property to the church with the strict condition that it remain dedicated to the general welfare of the town's residents. Today the doors stay open for lunch, dinner, and everything in between.
The kitchen embraces a seasonal approach, sourcing produce locally whenever possible and finishing dishes over an open flame. The chalkboard highlights ingredients drawn from meadows, water, and wild soil, reflecting a commitment to regional cooking that avoids pretension. Regulars return for staples like wood-grilled beef sirloin with black garlic jus, farm chicken prepared with béarnaise, or the weekly Thursday special known as de Donderdaghap. Dessert options such as brownie with vanilla ice cream and apple pie round out a menu defined by familiar flavors done well.
Beverage service reflects the same practical standards, featuring wines that span from Sicilian Grillo to Brunello di Montalcino and rotating taps supplied by regional breweries. Every glass of wine comes in a custom Broeker glass, while guests can order sparkling water from Ecotap or coffee roasted in-house by Boontje. This dedication to straightforward quality earned the restaurant a score of 12 in the 2026 Gault&Millau guide, recognizing a kitchen that delivers reliable dishes without unnecessary complication. The setting continues to function as a true gathering place, maintaining the promise of always having room for one more person at the table.
