The story
In Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, just outside Amsterdam, Ron Gastrobar Indonesia brings the bold flavours of the Indonesian archipelago to a setting that feels both lively and refined. The restaurant is part of the Ron Gastrobar family, the brainchild of celebrated chef Ron Blaauw, whose philosophy is simple: eating out should be a party.
The space makes the most of its waterside location. There is a covered garden at the back and a terrace along the Amstel, where summer evenings are spent by the water. Chef Guillaume leads the kitchen, working closely with Ron Blaauw to develop and perfect each dish until it fits the restaurant’s character. His personal favourite is the sate kambing – tender goat meat in a characteristic ketjap sauce that, in his words, achieves its absolute deliciousness through the harmony of flavours.
The menu is built around Indonesian cuisine, with two different rijsttafels alongside a broad à la carte selection. Dishes include udang laut peteh (langoustine with peteh beans), the vegetarian tahu telor (tofu, egg and peanut sauce), and five different satés that can be ordered individually or as a “Satasting” – one of each, or more. The kitchen also serves sensational Indonesian street food to start, designed to surprise with both taste and atmosphere.
Ron Gastrobar Indonesia Ouderkerk is recognised by the Michelin guide, a testament to the consistency and ambition of the cooking. Whether you come for a full rijsttafel or a few plates at the bar, the spirit here is generous, unpretentious, and rooted in the traditions of Indonesian cooking.
