The story

Veneur Amsterdam: Classic French cuisine by open fire on Weteringschans

A kitchen driven by produce and fire

At Veneur, the cooking is straightforward in the best sense: a product-driven kitchen, inspired by French tradition, the rhythm of the seasons, and the heat of an open fire. That sentence, taken from the restaurant’s own website, sums up the philosophy that earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026. Here, the fire is not a gimmick—it is the engine of flavour, coaxing something primal from carefully sourced ingredients.

Setting and atmosphere

The address is Weteringschans 171, a canal-side location in Amsterdam that feels both central and unhurried. Inside, counter dining puts you in direct sight of the open kitchen, while outdoor seating lets you enjoy the neighbourhood bustle on warmer days. The space is understated, letting the food and the glow of the embers take centre stage.

The menu and the philosophy

There is no fixed menu listed online—Veneur changes with what is available. The phrase “productgedreven keuken” (product-driven kitchen) is a promise: ingredients dictate the dishes, not the other way around. The French tradition referenced is the classic one—butter, wine, technique—yet the open fire adds a subtle smokiness and a rustic edge. Expect a concise, evolving selection that respects the ingredient and the season.

The recognition

Veneur’s Michelin Recommended status places it among restaurants that offer good cooking at a reasonable price. For Amsterdam, it is a welcome addition to the city’s Classic French scene—a place where the kitchen’s confidence comes from trusting the produce and the flame.

In a former hospitality venue, chefs Yoran Jacobi and Moriaan Koeleman, along with host and sommelier Bas Hazen (all formerly of Restaurant Juwelier), have brought their dream to life. Considerable investment has gone into the interior design, lending the space a cosmopolitan, worldly atmosphere. Diners can choose between the cozy restaurant, the eatbar with a view of the open kitchen, or, when the weather is nice, the marble terrace tables. The menu presents a well-curated selection of French-inspired dishes. The wine list features both familiar labels and exceptional selections from renowned producers, with many bottles available by the glass. We order a bottle of Os Dunares Rías Baixas, Albariño, to accompany our meal. The kitchen’s centerpiece is an impressive grill with roaring flames used to prepare the dishes. Paired with a Tanqueray gin and tonic, we begin with Zeeland oysters, sourdough bread, and salted Guernsey butter. For the starter, we enjoy lightly seared mackerel on thin slices of tomato confit with a codium and escabeche vinaigrette. With two perfectly fresh grilled langoustines, the heavenly, lightly sweet corail sauce truly shines, and we’re grateful to have some sourdough left to mop up the remaining sauce. Our server, Savannah Hagendijk, then suggests sharing the grilled turbot, noting that it weighs over 600 grams. Cooked to perfection, expertly filleted, and served with a green salad, pommes boulangères, and a smooth pil-pil sauce. Bas skillfully coordinates the service, which remains friendly and professional throughout. We reserve space for dessert: the clafoutis with vanilla ice cream arrives impeccably. Amsterdam now has a new culinary gem. Welcome to Lekker.
