The story
Just outside Arnhem, in Velp, a 600-year-old water mill – a national monument – houses Restaurant De Watermolen. The setting is rare: stone walls, the gentle sound of water, and an intimate, sheltered terrace with a Mediterranean feel. The kitchen here works with a creative, refined hand, preferring regional and organic products where possible. The result is a menu that feels both classic and alive.
Michelin has recognised De Watermolen with a Recommended award, a nod to the kitchen’s consistency and the quality of its classic cuisine with Mediterranean accents. The seasonal menus – from a three-course minimum on Fridays and Saturdays to a seven-course gastronomic journey for fine palates – showcase dishes such as Gravad Lax with wild gamba and dill cream, or a Ravioli with spinach and ricotta in a bechamel with cêpes and morel foam. The game evenings and the Beaujolais Nouveau lunch are annual highlights.
The wine list is extensive, and the digestif cabinet holds a serious collection of cognacs, calvados, armagnacs, and single malts. Owners Raymond and Lisanne Kluit, together with their team, run the room with a genuine, welcoming service that makes the experience feel effortless. Whether you choose the dining room or the terrace, De Watermolen offers a sense of place that few restaurants can match.
