The story
Boutique hotel-restaurant The Church occupies a striking neo-Gothic Lutheran church built in 1897–1898. Tucked away in Arnhem’s Modekwartier (Fashion Quarter), the space retains its soaring ceilings, original ornaments, and a sense of reverence – now reimagined for dining and overnight stays. The front door faces the city centre, the back opens onto the atelier-lined streets of the fashion district. It is a setting that feels both sacred and intimate.
The restaurant is the joint venture of chef Bart Leussink and maître d’/co-owner Janiek van den Broeck, who opened in March 2023 after years of dreaming of their own place. Bart’s cooking philosophy centres on honesty and purity: ingredients speak for themselves, flavours are clean and direct. Janiek brings a background in high-level hotel and restaurant service – sincere, attentive hospitality is her hallmark. Together they lead a young, ambitious team that has already earned significant recognition.
The Church was awarded a place in the Michelin Guide, recognised for its refined yet unfussy approach. The menu is described as light and pure, built around fresh acidity, fish, shellfish, and abundant vegetables – without superfluous elements. The open kitchen lets guests watch Bart and his team at work. For a more immersive encounter, the Chef’s Table offers 16 seats directly in front of the kitchen, where a six-, nine- or twelve-course Chef Experience menu is served. The bar and lounge area, meanwhile, is a spot for cocktails and small bites, with Bart preparing matching appetisers.
Because The Church is also a boutique hotel, the evening can extend into an overnight stay in one of the “floating” rooms that look out over the restaurant and the church’s vaulted ceiling. But the restaurant stands on its own as a destination. The combination of striking architecture, sincere hospitality, and cooking that lets the produce shine has made The Church a notable addition to Arnhem’s dining scene – one that the Michelin inspectors have seen fit to recommend.
