The story
In the heart of Loenen aan de Vecht, just a stone’s throw from the village church, Tante Koosje has been a destination for refined dining since 2005. The restaurant’s name may be familiar, but the experience is anything but ordinary. With a charming, flower-bordered terrace that recalls the south of France in summer, and one of the most extensive wine lists in the Netherlands, it’s a place that feels both relaxed and extraordinary.
The kitchen is led by chef Roland Veldhuijzen, a Frieslander born in 1964 who discovered his love for cooking early through his father, a pastry chef. After training and stints at renowned restaurants like De Wanne and Het Jagertje, he worked under Lucas Rive at De Bokkedoorns and André van Doorn at De Hoefslag before becoming head chef at Chapeau in Haarlem. There he earned a Michelin star in his first year. In April 2006, he took over the kitchen at Tante Koosje, a move that allowed him to fully express his talent.
Veldhuijzen’s style is pure and classic with modern touches. He is meticulous about sauces, always using the bones or shells of the main ingredient. Seasonal produce guides his menus, which change regularly.
Tante Koosje’s Michelin star reflects the precision and depth of Veldhuijzen’s cooking. The menu offers four to seven courses, from €105 to €150, and features dishes like yellowfin tuna with pavlova and mango, veal tartare with lobster and caviar, and warm sole fillet with pea vegetables. Signature dishes include grilled Frisian sugar bread with seared duck liver, and tarbot fillet baked on the bone.
A separate vegetarian menu of similar length is available—proof that vegetables receive the same thoughtful treatment as seafood and meats. For cheese lovers, a selection from the restaurant’s fromagers can supplement any course.
The interior of Tante Koosje is nostalgic and elegant. For private dining, the restaurant offers a unique wine attic, perfect for groups. The wine list itself is a highlight, curated with depth and breadth.
Open for dinner from 18:00 to 22:00, closed Sunday and Monday. A reservation is essential for this well-loved spot.
