The story
At the foot of the Oude Kerk in Delft, Le Vieux Jean offers an intimate setting for classic French cuisine. The restaurant is run by Désiré and Robert Jan Polman, who describe their approach as "lieflijk en bescheiden, maar ook verrassend ambitieus" – lovely and modest, yet surprisingly ambitious. That balance defines the experience here.
The dining room is remembered for its intimacy and the attentive service at each table. The kitchen sends out refined flavours on the plate, while the wine list – described as rich in aromas – complements the meal. The atmosphere is relaxed enough for any occasion, whether a quiet dinner for two or a gathering with friends and family. As the team puts it, "lekker eten geen reden behoeft" – good food needs no excuse.
For larger groups, Le Vieux Jean offers three private rooms: the Opkamer, the Wijnkamer, and the Franse Kamer. Each provides a distinct setting for celebrations, business dinners, or family meals.
The restaurant has earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand, an award that recognises good quality cooking at a good value. It is a fitting nod to the Polmans' commitment to refined, accessible French cuisine in the heart of Delft.
Le Vieux Jean is open for lunch on Fridays and Saturdays, and for dinner from Wednesday through Saturday.
