The story
Located in the historic Nicolaas church in Appingedam, De Basiliek serves contemporary international cuisine rooted in North East Groningen traditions.
Owners Hans and Adolf Beukema transformed the former parish into a dining room where chef Willem Bos leads the pass. He builds his menus around seasonal produce sourced from farms just outside the province boundaries. The kitchen blends French inspired cooking with straightforward regional ingredients, offering everything from plant-based plates to seafood-heavy mains. This dedication to local sourcing has kept De Basiliek on the Lekker500 Top 500 list for several consecutive years.
A starter of Groninger Blaarkopkoe steak tartare arrives with a slow-cooked egg yolk and dried red cabbage leaves. The main course often features slow-braised veal shoulder paired with pearl barley risotto and fresh asparagus. Chef Bos also prepares refined vegetable terrines wrapped in seaweed to highlight coastal flavors. These dishes arrive in generous portions that reviewers frequently praise alongside the careful execution.
Tall stained glass windows cast diffused light across a black-painted beam ceiling and classic white tiled floors. Acoustic wave panels line the walls to keep conversation levels comfortable during busy evening services. A sliding glass partition divides the main hall from the original altar area, which hosts private dinners when needed. Guests sit in upholstered chairs beneath crystal chandeliers while staff guide them through an extensive wine list curated by sommelier Rick Blaauw.
