The story
In the heart of Dordrecht, on the first floor of Stadsbrasserie De Witt, La Cebolla offers a dining experience rooted in simplicity and quality. The name, Spanish for “onion,” speaks to the restaurant’s philosophy: versatility, humility, and an essential role in every dish. Here, classic Mediterranean influences meet a modern kitchen, resulting in cooking that is both grounded and inventive.
La Cebolla is the work of Cees and Linda, whose many trips to Spain inform the menu’s bright, layered flavours. The cooking is modern cuisine – not in the sense of fussy techniques, but in its clean compositions and respect for produce. The restaurant holds a Michelin Recommended award, the only one in Dordrecht, a recognition that underscores its commitment to consistent, thoughtful cooking.
Diners can choose from a variety of small plates, larger mains, and a chef’s menu of four to six courses. Appetisers such as a Gillardeau oyster with ponzu and smoked olive oil, Jamón Ibérico from Joselito, or a vegetarian taco with corn and tomato set the tone. Mains include wild sea bass with tomato and fennel, a lamb korma curry, and a daily beef special – even Wagyu A5 for those seeking indulgence. Sides like patatas bravas and green salad keep things simple. Desserts range from a Dordt chocolate creation to tiramisu with coffee ice cream.
The dining room is air-conditioned and wheelchair accessible via lift. Dinner runs from Tuesday to Saturday, and the team – Linda, Hannah, Berend, and many more – ensures service is attentive without ceremony. It is a place for good food, nothing more, nothing less.
