The story
Since 2018, Marjon and Arnejan have run De Grote Frederik Bistro in Groningen’s Oosterpoortwijk. After years in Freiburg, Germany, returning to Groningen felt like coming home – and with that return came a dream: a daughter, Jet, and their own place to share a love for good food and hospitality.
The bistro is a welcoming, relaxed space where Chef Arnejan cooks with seasonal produce, aiming for flavour without fuss. The kitchen offers a fixed four-course tasting menu that changes with the seasons – summer might bring yellowfin mackerel with glass noodles and wasabi hollandaise, or confit duck with bospeen carrots and aniseed bread. A winter menu features salsify with chilli oil and grapefruit, turbot with endive and saffron beurre blanc, or pheasant with Schupfnudeln and red beet. An extra course – such as lobster with strawberry, blood sausage, and barbecue mayonnaise – is available for an additional supplement. Marjon pairs each course with carefully chosen wines, offering both alcoholic and alcohol-free pairings.
Their cooking earned a Bib Gourmand from Michelin in 2022, a recognition they treasure for its emphasis on quality and value. The restaurant continues to be recommended by the guide – a testament to the consistent, personal cooking that defines the place.
Dinners here are unhurried, lasting at least two and a half hours. The couple works without a large team: Arnejan cooks solo in the kitchen, which means dietary restrictions must be communicated at booking and some allergies cannot be accommodated. The atmosphere remains unpretentious – a neighbourhood bistro where everyone is welcome, and the focus stays squarely on the plate and the company.
