The story
Café Samabe opened in 2019 inside “De Zon,” a monumental former Vroom & Dreesman store dating back to 1899. The high ceilings and authentic details give the space a character that is both refined and welcoming. Owner Richold Bakker and head chef Jiani Gritzalis, together with chef Hozan Kassem, lead a kitchen brigade that focuses on the flavours of Bali and Indonesia.
The menu is built around rijsttafels, vegetarian options, and slow-cooked meat or fish stews, alongside original satés and à la carte specialities. Signature dishes include Udang Peteh – large prawns in a peteh bean sauce – and Ayam Betawi, breaded chicken thighs in a sweet-spicy kecap sauce. Every plate reflects the kitchen’s commitment to authentic Indonesian cooking, prepared with care and balance.
Café Samabe’s Haarlem location has now received a Bib Gourmand from Michelin for the second time – an award that honours excellent food at a reasonable price. The team had already earned seven Bib Gourmands at their restaurant in Bergen (NH), making this recognition a continuation of a well-established tradition. For diners seeking genuine Balinese and Indonesian cuisine in Haarlem, Café Samabe delivers a satisfying, no‑fluff experience.
