The story

Restaurant Moustique in Haarlem – Michelin-Recommended Modern Cuisine

The Story Behind the Name

Restaurant Moustique opened in May 2021 on Haarlem’s Oude Groenmarkt. The name is a playful nod to the “Haarlemse Mug” – the mosquito nickname locals wear with pride. It signals the restaurant’s ethos: top quality without pretension.

The Team Behind the Kitchen and Dining Room

Chef Jesse van Leeuwen and maître Jelmer Molendijk previously worked together at De Vrienden van Jacob, part of Landgoed Duin & Kruidberg. Their shared ambition to open their own place led them to this Haarlem address. Van Leeuwen’s modern cuisine revolves around the best seasonal, regional ingredients, sourced from passionate producers. Molendijk’s front-of-house team delivers polished, attentive service that feels natural, not stiff.

The Experience

The dining room features a chic bar stocked with a wide selection of wines by the glass or bottle, cocktails, and other drinks. A heated terrace with heated cushions extends the season for outdoor lunch or dinner. The menu changes with the seasons. At dinner, guests choose from three to six courses. Recent starters include hamachi with yellow curry, ginger, citrus and kimchi, and a beet dish with ricotta and orange. Mains range from flat iron steak with artichoke to cod with spinach and brandade. Desserts like pure chocolate with mandarin and cardamom or a peer dessert with Greek yoghurt and honey finish the meal. A cheese selection is also available.

Michelin Recognition

The quality of this modern cuisine earned Restaurant Moustique a place in the Michelin Guide Netherlands, a distinction the team wears with pride. The award reflects their dedication to pure ingredients and refined technique served in a genuinely welcoming atmosphere.

Moustique has found its place in the culinary heart of Haarlem. Chef Jesse van Leeuwen and maître Jelmer Molendijk share the guiding principle that top quality does not need to be expensive, chic, or formal. The ambiance is stylishly appointed with long upholstered benches along the walls, ochre-yellow chairs, lacquered wooden table tops paired with white cotton napkins, and brass-toned cutlery. We have a clear view of the open kitchen where focused preparation is underway. The room is pleasantly bustling, and the guests are cheerful and in high spirits. Jelle pours a glass of Cembra Pinot Grigio as an aperitif, offering lovely notes of peach and pear. The three-course menu opens with raw marinated trout accompanied by nashi pear jelly, jalapeño vinaigrette, and feta cheese. A fine, refreshing start built on super-fresh ingredients. We move on to slow-cooked beef brisket served alongside creamy bean purée, salty lamb beard, vanilla foam, and a garlic crisp. No frills, but what’s on the plate excels in every way. Accompanying it is a 2022 Grand Veneur Côtes du Rhône, abundant with red fruits like strawberry, cherry, and raspberry. My dining companion wasn’t quite as fortunate with the meat, as it featured quite a bit of fat around the edges. This strikes us as a bit careless, so we bring it to the attention of the service staff. For dessert, a beautifully arranged plate of raspberry ice cream, beetroot, variations of licorice mousse, and crispy licorice shards. The role of the beetroot escapes us, and it could easily be left out. We don’t find the excellent hot espresso on the bill. A thoughtful gesture that we truly appreciate!

Welkom in Lekker!
