The story
In Valkenburg, just outside Leiden, Dennis de Prie and Daan Reijngoudt run a restaurant built around a singular idea: an open kitchen that turns nearly every seat into a chef’s table. Since opening in September 2019, LIMES aan den Rijn has drawn attention for its modern cuisine, served in a space that manages to feel both spacious and warm, with high ceilings and excellent acoustics. The Michelin guide has taken note, awarding the restaurant its Recommended status for 2026.
The kitchen offers a surprise menu in four to seven courses, always beginning with three amuses and sourdough bread with salted butter. Vegetarian versions are available, and the all-in arrangement includes a house aperitif, a wine pairing, table water, and coffee or tea with friandises. For lunch, a shorter three- to five-course menu is served, tailored to fit a business schedule. The à la carte selection changes with the seasons, but recent dishes give a clear sense of the kitchen’s style: langoustine tartare with wild garlic, cucumber, and melon; slow-cooked short rib with Pico de Gallo, corn, and mole sauce; and a dessert of blackberries in various preparations with white chocolate.
The restaurant sits directly on the N206, a short drive from the A44 and the N434, with free parking at the door. A large terrace borders the Oude Rijn, with mooring for boats. Inside, the main dining room seats up to 120, while a half-open mezzanine above the kitchen offers a more private setting for up to 24 guests. The space is wheelchair accessible and has an accessible toilet.
LIMES aan den Rijn also caters for private events, from walking dinners for up to 180 people to seated parties and company celebrations with a DJ or live act. The team is open to discussing custom arrangements for larger groups, even on normally closed days.
