The story
Damianz occupies an unusual address: the old city jail of Roermond. The restaurant, part of the Hotel Het Arresthuis, leans into its past with a wink. Your meal begins with an amuse of water and bread — a nod to prison rations — before the experience shifts entirely. The name itself honors Damianus, a Bishop of Roermond who once lived on the site. The result is a dining room that feels both historic and thoroughly modern, where high ceilings and thick walls create a surprisingly warm atmosphere.
Chef Jeroen van Gansewinkel leads the kitchen. His path was clear from primary school, and he trained in some of Limburg’s best gastronomic kitchens before arriving at Damianz. He builds on a classical French foundation, then layers in influences from around the world. Shellfish and poultry often take center stage in his signature dishes. The cuisine is best described as Asian Fusion and French — expect familiar techniques applied to globally inspired combinations, always driven by the best seasonal products.
Damianz offers a choice of tasting menus, from four to eight courses, available for both lunch and dinner. Maître-sommelier David Manders handles the wine pairings, focusing on European bottles that complement the kitchen’s bold flavors. His service style is warm and unhurried, with an emphasis on reading the table. The restaurant’s recognition as Michelin Recommended speaks to the consistency and ambition of what Jeroen and his team are doing — every plate carries his signature, from the first bite to the last.
