The story

Bistro Eddie Rotterdam: A Refined Take on French Cuisine

The Approach and the Space

Bistro Eddie anchors itself in Rotterdam with a straightforward approach to French cuisine. The compact menu invites guests to share plates rather than navigate rigid tasting routes. This philosophy keeps the focus on seasonal ingredients and familiar techniques that reward repetition. Recognition from the Lekker500 Top 500 list confirms the steady execution behind every plate.

The Chef and the Pass

Magdalena Szajko holds the reins here, directing a kitchen that respects classical foundations while allowing flexibility across the service. Diners watch through the open counter as cooks plate simple preparations without unnecessary complexity. The result feels grounded, relying on precise cuts and honest seasoning rather than theatrical presentation. This French kitchen prioritizes consistency over fleeting trends.

Shared Plates and Cellar Notes

Communal ordering forms the backbone of the experience, starting with a dense paté de campagne served alongside crisp gherkins and pickled silver onions. A perfectly structured venison tartare arrives next, its natural gaminess balanced by a light acidic note. Steaks and fries follow as reliable comfort, though the true highlight remains the curated wine list. The wine program stands out, steering tables through regional pairings and unexpected Georgians like a Taoba Saperavi that blends cleanly with roasted meat.

Rhythm and Reception

The room sits among stately waterfront buildings, creating a lively backdrop where the open kitchen commands attention. Conversation occasionally rises to match the volume of passing guests, but the friendly staff keep the tempo comfortable. Tables receive attentive guidance from a team that values personal interaction over rigid service scripts. Guests leave with a clear sense of what this corner of Rotterdam delivers: unpretentious classic preparations executed with care.

In Rotterdam's Scheepsvaartkwartier, between the stately buildings along the Maas, we find Bistro Eddie. A cozy and relaxed spot. The acoustics sometimes call for speaking a bit louder, but the open kitchen and lively energy more than make up for it. The kitchen is classically French-oriented, with a compact menu that encourages sharing. No set menus or extensive chef's tasting menus here, but clear attention to traditional dishes and a fine selection of French wines. The pâté de campagne with gherkins and silver onions is robust, well-balanced, and accompanied by simple yet delicious bread. The Carlerhard Riesling from Rheingau 2022 is very good. This is followed by the veal croquette. Nothing particularly impressive about it. Next comes the venison tartare: fresh, tender, and nearly perfect in texture, with a subtle acidity that deepens the flavor. Then the steak with fries. The fries could have been fried a little longer, but the steak is excellent and highly satisfying. It is paired with a Georgian red wine, Taoba Saperavi, Kakheti 2021. Notes of chocolate, pepper, and berry tannins are a pleasant surprise in this wine, which tastes exceptional. For dessert comes the baba au rhum, which unfortunately falls slightly short. The cheese board featuring Dutch Emmentaler, Pierre Robert, and Blue de Regalis is well-executed. The accompanying Sauternes is elegant and not too sweet. Magdalena Szajko is in charge here. The team is warm and friendly, with the wine advice truly standing out. The pace is pleasant, and the personal farewell rounds off the evening nicely. Bistro Eddie is a charming and relaxed establishment firmly rooted in the French bistro tradition.
