Family-run seafood restaurant in Kralingen known for spartelverse fish, chalkboard menus, and consistent Lekker500 recognition since 2019.

The story

Vis op de Dijk Rotterdam: Fresh Seafood at a Family-Favorite Spot

Vis op de Dijk in Rotterdam serves spartelverse seafood with a focus on purity and hospitality, drawing regulars to its blue-tinted corner spot in Kralingen. The family Kloeg has built this venue into a local staple, earning repeated placement in the Lekker500 Top 500 through sheer consistency rather than theatrical presentation.

The Open Kitchen and the Kloeg Family

Tim Kloeg steers the open kitchen where his parents Hans and Linda laid the groundwork, turning the space into a hub of quiet efficiency and visible warmth. Daily prep focuses on spartelverse ingredients that arrive ready for immediate treatment, allowing the team to showcase technique without masking quality. The cooking style prioritizes perfect cuisson and clean flavors over complex garnishes, a discipline that keeps the same neighborhood crowd returning year after year. Guests watching from the counter see exactly how a tarbot meunière earns its reputation when fillets release cleanly from the skin while staying moist inside.

Seasonal Seafood and Signature Plates

The chalkboard menu shifts with the catch, highlighting items like a half-dozen Fine de Claire oysters followed by fleshy wild Royale Cabanon varieties that draw immediate second orders. Garlic-infused gamba's appear frequently on the board, served in generous portions that disappear quickly alongside crisp fries. For those preferring warmer preparations, the Asian-style tuna arrives seared just enough to keep the center red while the sesame crust adds texture. Dessert offers a distinct twist with the 'Bokkenpoot', reimagined as a substantial plate featuring pistachio ice cream, cherry ice cream, and white chocolate mousse rather than the traditional small pastry shape.

A Coastal Vibe Within a Corner Building

White walls and blue accents create a light interior that recalls a small French fishing village, anchored by rough stone textures and simple wooden furniture. Patrons can dine on the ground floor or climb a steep staircase to reach the vide above, where high windows let in extra daylight during lunch service. Black schoolbords mounted on the walls display the day's offerings in white chalk, reinforcing the straightforward approach that defines the entire experience. Prices remain grounded within a nine-to-euro range, ensuring the location feels accessible to everyone from neighbors dropping in for mussels to visitors seeking honest seafood without pretension.

Lekker500 — Top 500

Tim Kloeg’s family restaurant, which he took over from his parents, Hans and Linda, in Rotterdam’s Kralingen district. Here, exceptional hospitality blends seamlessly with the serving of fish dishes so fresh they’re practically still swimming. The interior of this welcoming space, with its tall windows, perfectly mirrors the atmosphere: cozy and unpretentious. Blue tones dominate, the tables and chairs are made of wood, and seating is available on both the ground floor and the mezzanine, accessed via a steep staircase. Regularly changing menus appear from the open kitchen, written in white chalk on blackboards. The wine list is stocked primarily with white wines, many of which can be ordered by the glass. We start with a half-dozen Fine de Claire oysters, followed by a sashimi tasting of salmon, tuna, scallop, and hamachi. Each one fresher than fresh. From the “big catch” section, we choose a cod loin that is served perfectly cooked, flaking apart almost effortlessly, accompanied by a velvety lobster sauce. For sides, we order a bowl of crispy fried fries and an endive salad. Life is good, life is fine at the Kloeg family restaurant, and when the bill arrives, we can hardly believe how deliciously we’ve eaten for such a remarkably reasonable price. It comes as no surprise, then, that this place is always bustling.

Fish lovers invariably find their way to this cozy restaurant run by the Kloeg family in Rotterdam's Kralingen district, and Vis op de Dijk consequently boasts many regulars who truly appreciate its cuisine. Tim, the son of Hans and Linda Kloeg, is now at the helm and continues the relaxed and cheerful atmosphere in the same vein. The decor is unmistakably Mediterranean, featuring plenty of blue tones, and when the ground floor is full, you can take a seat on the mezzanine. The regularly changing menu is displayed on blackboards. Auction-fresh seasonal fish takes center stage and is available in a wide variety of types and sizes. The wine list features mostly white wines, several of which are available by the glass. We start off tasting briny Fine de Claire oysters and fleshy, sweet – originally Irish – wild Royale Cabanon oysters. They are so delicious that we order another portion. We continue with a plate of perfectly prepared prawns in garlic alongside a generous loin of cod with foamy lobster sauce. Served with crispy fries and a bowl of green salad. All of this is brought to us by cheerful waiting staff who deserve high praise for their genuine Rotterdam enthusiasm combined with utmost attentiveness. Finally, the bill is entirely in line with the quality of the meal. No wonder it is always busy here.

A cozy, atmospheric, no-nonsense family restaurant that once inside could just as easily have been located in a small French fishing village. You can sit down on the ground floor, but there’s also a mezzanine above the kitchen. The only minor drawback is that the temperature there rises a bit faster as the evening progresses. The menu is written out on black chalkboards on the wall and features fish, fish, and more fish. Oysters, sashimi, mussels, eel on toast as starters, turbot, sea bass, and prawns as main courses, alongside purely seasonal fish. The Kloeg family runs a kitchen that attracts many regulars. We sit on simple chairs at a wooden table and are served by very friendly, hospitable ladies who make time for a pleasant chat. There’s no extensive wine list, predominantly white wines at a good price, with plenty of options available by the glass. The recommended mussels in cream sauce with plenty of fresh parsley are plump and perfect for soaking up the sauce with a good chunk of bread. The portion of fried prawns in garlic oil is very generous, but disappears quickly. The Asian-style tuna is beautifully red, though warm inside, and is served with oil, soy sauce, red pepper, Chinese cabbage, and spring onion. It comes with crispy fries and green salad. There are also prawns in curry sauce with a subtle touch of coriander! Juicy, mildly spicy, and again generously plated. Here you won’t find fussy little beds of sauces or gels, but rather an extremely fresh kitchen that champions pure flavors. And last but not least: staff who clearly enjoy working in the hospitality industry. Merci!

If you haven't made a reservation at this friendly, informal family restaurant in the lively Kralingen neighborhood, you will almost certainly miss out on a table. On sunny days, even the sidewalk terrace is packed. That doesn't surprise us. At Vis op de Dijk, you taste the sea on your plate. It is cozily bustling with plenty of chatter. Neighbors of all ages find their way to the corner establishment with its Breton flair without fail. The dishes are listed on a board and that is it. There is no menu. The wine list is limited, with only house wines available by the glass. Here, live-fresh fish, shellfish, and crustaceans are prepared simply, without any fuss. Fish as it was meant to be. Salmon sashimi naturally hinges on the quality of the fish, and here it is top-notch. Live-fresh, mild in flavor, and rich in fat. The temperature is also perfectly calibrated. The tuna tataki is finger-licking good. Briefly seared tuna with a sesame seed crust and a delicious, savory sauce. Fish should swim, and a sparklingly crisp glass of Cheverny from the Loire Valley puts us in an even better mood. We feast on a generous portion of grilled black tiger prawns drizzled with tangy lime butter. The shellfish are meaty, juicy, and easy to peel. They come with excellent fries and a classic Dutch salad. For dessert, we order a 'Bokkenpoot' without any idea what awaits us. It turns out to be a giant version of the familiar cookie, filled with an unusual combination of pistachio ice cream, cherry ice cream, and white chocolate mousse. It is cloyingly sweet, and refined is definitely not the word. But it is undeniably delicious! The portions are generously sized and the prices are reasonable. Finally, the staff works tirelessly to ensure you have a wonderful experience. One minor note: the wine list could be a bit more exciting.

A popular restaurant on the corner of Oudedijk in Kralingen. It embodies typical Rotterdam no-nonsense: no excessive garnishes, just well-balanced and delicious cooking. And above all: affordable. No wonder guests love to dine here (indoors and outdoors, on the spacious terrace). The interior is defined by Spartan simplicity: square wooden tables and chairs, white paper napkins, cutlery placed in a small holder on the corner of the table, a wine list that is minimal but effective, and old-fashioned delicious chunks of baguette. Everything radiates freshness and warm hospitality. Parents Hans and Linda Kloeg founded and renovated the establishment, and son Tim takes over the reins this year, leaving the kitchen in the capable hands of Dirk Kokké and Asperando Boerleider. We feast on bouchot mussels in a delicious sauce, and on an old-fashioned delicious (and stuffed!) prawn cocktail, paired with an excellent Pinot Grigio. Next come house-made prawn croquettes with mustard mayo, and two fish dishes: a jumbo-sized sole, served whole for you to fillet yourself, alongside a small sea bass with an Asian-style garnish. All incredibly fresh and delicious. To finish, a compact arrangement of hazelnut paste, chocolate, pastry, ice cream, and cream in a quirky and generously portioned take on a bokkenpoot (goat’s foot pastry). A wonderful spot!

The name gives it away: a little seafood paradise tucked into a charming corner building in the heart of Kralingen. The interior features plenty of white and blue, rough stone walls, wooden tables with white chairs, a life-sized photograph of a Breton fishing boat on the upper floor, and a chalkboard listing the dishes. The Kloeg family owns the restaurant and guarantees seasonal fish dishes at fair prices in a welcoming atmosphere. Chef Tim runs the kitchen, while Linda and Laura Salters act as hostesses. A relaxed, authentically Rotterdam vibe hangs in the air, and you can feel the shared enthusiasm among guests for coming here to enjoy a good meal of fresh fish. If so, you've come to the right place. The fish is incredibly fresh and served without any frills, featuring perfect cooking, careful attention to appetizing presentation, and a pure, honest approach. Paired with a good glass of wine if desired. Simply delicious!

This fish restaurant in the center of Kralingen is decorated largely in white and blue, and on the first floor you will find a large photograph of a Breton fishing boat. There is also a small terrace for summer days. The Kloeg family has everything well organized. Chef Tim focuses on preparing fresh fish in the open kitchen, while his mother Linda and Laura Salters act as the hostesses. The menu changes regularly and offers seasonal selections. We start with a glass of white Pinot Grigio from the Castel Firmian estate in South Tyrol. It sparkles with notes of lime and apple. For our starter, we choose a Dutch shrimp cocktail with crisp, fresh pink prawns on green lettuce and topped with a creamy cocktail sauce. Next is a hearty fish soup with rouille, along with slices of baguette topped with grated cheese, served in a lidded glass jar. The main course is turbot meunière pan-fried skin-side down, allowing the fillets to easily come away from the bones. A classic, but so delicious. The poached monkfish tail with hollandaise is also a home run. The fillets are thick and cooked to perfection, served alongside tender white asparagus. The Castel Firmian Pinot Grigio from South Tyrol pairs excellently with this dish as well. We follow up with a tarte tatin. Simple but good. No frills on the plate here, just beautiful, pure, and honest food. Tip: there is free parking nearby after 6 p.m. That's a nice bonus.

A lovely corner building with blue awnings and a charming little terrace. Inside, plenty of white accented by wooden tables, an open kitchen, a central bar, and everything feels fresh and meticulously maintained. The atmosphere is wonderfully cozy and comfortably informal. The Kloeg family is behind it all: father Hans and son Tim cook in the kitchen, while mother Linda acts as hostess, and she has everything running perfectly. From the kitchen come straightforward fish dishes. There are no frills, just perfectly executed cooking. Take the fried Dutch squid, for instance—tender and crispy, served with a light, fresh aioli. The tuna with bok choy, red pepper, garlic, and a sesame-soy dressing is equally delicious, cooked to perfection: warm and beautifully pink on the inside. Oriental notes with tuna always work well; it might not sound groundbreaking on its own, but here they’re applied with great refinement, and the Grüner Veltliner Markowitsch complements these flavors flawlessly. The sea bream arrives whole, stuffed with herbs like thyme and rosemary, roasted in the oven with lemon butter. It comes with fresh fries, homemade mayonnaise, and a green salad. For dessert, a warm, crispy apple tarte tatin is served with not-too-sweet vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. We overhear a guest next to us sigh that she’d love to visit Vis op de Dijk every single day. And why not?
