The story
Since 2012, Bovenmeester has occupied a former school building in Steenwijk, transforming classrooms into a welcoming dining room. The atmosphere is informal and relaxed, with a warm, stylish interior that makes every meal feel special. When the weather cooperates, the terrace offers a sunny spot for lunch or an early dinner.
Chef Raymond Hengeveld leads the kitchen with a straightforward philosophy: “Zolang de smaken kloppen!” — as long as the flavours are right. His cooking is rooted in classic French techniques, but he freely incorporates other influences and styles. The result is refined, accessible Modern French cuisine that prioritises taste over pretence. Hengeveld is only satisfied when guests leave happy, and that commitment to genuine hospitality runs through every dish.
Bovenmeester has held a Michelin Bib Gourmand since 2013, an award given to restaurants that offer “good quality, good value cooking.” The restaurant’s choice menu has been praised by Michelin as an example of culinary craftsmanship with an excellent price-quality ratio. This recognition aligns with the team’s belief that quality dining should be accessible to everyone.
The centrepiece of the dinner menu is the Chef’s Menu, where you choose a combination of fish, meat, or vegetarian courses. From late July to early September, lobster is served by reservation only. For a more relaxed experience, the à la carte menu allows you to build your own meal. Lunch features mini sandwiches, soups, and salads that you can mix and match.
Bovenmeester also offers High Wine — a guided tour through several glasses of wine paired with matching dishes, from starters to dessert. It’s a convivial way to spend an afternoon or evening.
Whether you come for a leisurely lunch, a celebratory dinner, or one of the regular cooking workshops, Bovenmeester delivers a genuinely enjoyable dining experience in a setting that feels both refined and down-to-earth.
