The story
Basaal calls itself a modern Dutch restaurant and wine bar, and the description fits. The kitchen is driven by the market and the seasons, letting produce speak for itself. The menu changes often, reflecting what is fresh and available. Founded on the idea of simplicity, the cooking is direct and confident.
The à la carte menu reads like a walk through the best of the market. Starters include a cucumber, almond, wasabi leaf, sea lettuce and shiso plate – fresh and precise. Hearty options like pork cheek croquettes with burnt apple or duck and pork neck terrine with prune ketchup set the tone. Main courses range from pollock with cockles and white asparagus to a roasted Barbary duck breast (400 grams) served with chicory, citrus and frites. For two, there is a whole côte de boeuf with salad and fries. Desserts such as strawberry granita with Thai basil and baked cream keep the seasonal focus.
Wine is central, with an all-European, biodynamic selection. The list covers cult classics and young growers, from a sparkling Portuguese Bical blend to a 2018 Rioja from R. Lopez de Heredia. Wines are available by the glass or bottle, and the list is constantly expanding.
Basaal’s consistent quality and value earned it a Michelin Bib Gourmand award, a mark of good cooking at reasonable prices. That recognition is well placed – the kitchen delivers honest, flavourful food without pretension, and the wine programme matches the ambition.
