The story
Since 1996, De Basiliek has been a reliable address in the heart of The Hague, just steps from Central Station, the Mauritshuis and the Plein. The team – led by chefs Chen Li Chung and Benjamin Verboon – cooks with a straightforward philosophy: honest, affordable and especially tasty food in a relaxed, sociable atmosphere. Their style is modern cuisine with clear international and Mediterranean influences, and the menu is refreshed every three months to keep things interesting.
That commitment to quality without pretense earned De Basiliek a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026, an award that recognises good cooking at a good price – exactly what this restaurant delivers.
The menu is designed for sharing or building your own tasting experience. Small bites like bitterballen, squid with pepper and salt, and oysters get things started. Starters range from a rock shrimp with salmon, avocado and yuzu mayo to a tuna crudo with ginger and jalapeño, or a lamb skewer with whipped feta and chermoula. Main courses include fish of the day, polder chicken with shiitake broth, bavette with pepper sauce, and a generous prime rib for two. Vegetarians are well served with dishes like salsify with hedgehog mushroom and parmesan, or cauliflower tempura with ajo blanco.
Desserts are equally considered: verveine panna cotta with mango and lychee, a chocolate bombolino with tonka bean, or a classic Don Pedro. The kitchen also offers fixed-price menus from two to six courses, each available with a wine pairing – a smart way to taste broadly without overspending.
The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming – the kind of place that works just as well for a romantic dinner as for a business lunch or a celebration with friends. The restaurant also caters for private parties and groups, tailoring the menu to the occasion. Whether you come for a quick lunch or a leisurely evening, De Basiliek delivers consistent, flavourful modern cuisine in a setting that feels genuinely hospitable.
