The story
On the historic market square of Groede, close to the Zeeland beaches and the characteristic polder landscape of West-Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, Etablissement 1880 has been creating a distinct culinary experience since 2002. Chef Mariella Jongman and host Danny Jongman, together with their team, run a restaurant where dedication, knowledge, and a love for the craft come together.
The menu is a surprise tasting menu—pure indulgence with a Zeeland accent. Guests choose between fish or meat for the main course, allowing the kitchen to work creatively with daily fresh, seasonal, and regional ingredients. Chef Mariella transforms these into what the restaurant describes as "culinary artworks." The Modern French approach is evident in the precision and respect for produce, while the local Zeeland character adds a sense of place.
Host Danny enhances the experience with a carefully selected wine list. He believes wine and food are inseparable, and the right pairing amplifies taste. The list offers around twenty wines by the glass and a broad selection of bottles from France, Spain, South Africa, the United States, and New Zealand.
The setting is welcoming, with the option to extend the experience by staying overnight in one of the two cozy suites. Guests can wake up in the quiet village of Groede and enjoy breakfast in the open kitchen or on the garden terrace. This combination of refined Modern French cuisine, local ingredients, and a relaxed atmosphere earned Etablissement 1880 a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026.
