The story
Hof aan Zee is a small restaurant and overnight retreat set in a historic Scandinavian-style farmhouse in Koudekerke, a short walk from the Dishoek beach. The building, a post-war emergency farm built with Nordic materials and to a Nordic blueprint, has been in the Goedbloed family since 1948. In 2010, Irma Goedbloed and her husband, chef Marcel Meijer, turned Irma’s former childhood living room into the restaurant that now anchors the property.
Marcel Meijer leads the kitchen with a philosophy rooted in the New Nordic Cuisine movement. The restaurant describes its style as Zeeuws New Nordic – a marriage of local Zeeland ingredients and Scandinavian culinary thinking. The team grows much of its own produce in an on-site vegetable garden and on a plot at Biologische boerderij Bioduin, a nearby organic farm where their own pigs are raised. Vegetables take center stage, and preservation techniques such as fermenting, drying, and smoking are used extensively.
“The Nordic style is not only reflected in our dishes, but also in our way of working: liberal, hospitable and pure,” the restaurant notes. The result is a menu that changes with the seasons and surprises with its clarity and depth.
Hof aan Zee earned a place in the Michelin guide for 2026, a nod to its refined yet unpretentious approach to country cooking with Scandinavian influences. The restaurant is open Thursday through Sunday for dinner, and guests can extend their visit in one of the farm’s hotel rooms or wooden cottages. The atmosphere remains accessible – creative gastronomy served without formality, in a building that tells a story of family, place, and the sea.
