The story
Perched on the ramparts of Akershus Fortress, Festningen Restaurant occupies what was once a prison built in 1836. The building has been transformed into a rustic brasserie with one of Oslo's finest locations. The panoramic view stretches across the Oslofjord, Aker Brygge, and the area around City Hall. In summer, the outdoor terrace expands to 300 seats across two levels, all set within unique historical surroundings.
The kitchen team works with exciting, seasonal ingredients to craft a menu that changes with the market. The a la carte and daily menus showcase modern cuisine rooted in the Nordic seasons. Starters might include langoustine bisque with the day's catch, or a creamy linguine with smoked salmon and trout roe. Mains range from braised beef cheek with pommes mousseline to oven-baked skrei with leek beurre blanc. A chef’s menu offers a curated two-course experience.
Festningen's consistent quality has earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction, a testament to the kitchen's skill and the restaurant's inviting atmosphere. Inside, the dining room seats 150 in charming, historic surroundings. The wine list is carefully selected to complement the modern cuisine, and the air-conditioned space ensures comfort year-round. Whether dining indoors or on the terrace, guests experience a warm, welcoming brasserie in a setting that is both grand and intimate.
