The story
Madonna, in Oslo's Opera district, earned a place in the 2026 Michelin guide as a Recommended restaurant. The recognition points to a kitchen that turns out modern cuisine with confidence and clarity, without pretension.
The restaurant has a counter dining setup, air conditioning, and a sizeable outdoor terrace that catches the sun late into the evening. It opens for lunch on Saturdays and for dinner from Monday to Saturday, with the kitchen serving until 21 (20 on Mondays). The mood is social and unhurried, equally suited for a quick meal or a longer evening.
Dishes are direct and flavour-driven. Starters include oysters with coconut nuoc cham, panfried bread with house butter, and a deep fried spicy shrimp toast. Mains range from halibut with leche de tigre and puffed buckwheat to butter fried Arctic cod with mussels and preserved vegetables, and short-rib of beef with smoked beets and coffee. The entrecôte, from Horgen Gård, comes with gnocchi, parmesan and garlic. The beef tartar gets a hit of Västerbotten cheese and truffles.
Vegetables are treated with the same care: kohlrabi with celeriac, kale and salted rhubarb, or squash marinated in lemongrass with clams and wild greens. Desserts include rhubarb tart with tonka beans and lovage, and ice cream and cake made with honey from Nannestad. On Mondays, a three-course menu plus dessert is offered at 500 NOK (otherwise 800 NOK the rest of the week). There is also a daily four-course menu for 750 NOK.
The cooking draws on Norwegian ingredients: beef from Horgen Gård, honey from Nannestad, and foraged wild greens. Fermentation appears in dishes like churros made with fermented potato, served with a dip of leek, finger lime and lobster claws. The style is ingredient-led, modern, and never overwrought.
