The story
Beneath the celebrated Statholdergaarden, which has held a Michelin star since 1998, lies Statholderens Mat og Vinkjeller — an informal bistro where the same dedication to Norwegian ingredients meets a relaxed atmosphere. The team describes the ethos simply: “We want Statholdergaarden to be like an extension of our own dining room.”
The menu changes with the seasons, relying on Norwegian produce at its peak. The specialty is the large tasting menus, which are both popular and reasonably priced. This is classic cuisine, prepared with a modern sensibility, in a setting that feels welcoming rather than formal.
The kitchen’s long-standing Michelin recognition speaks to a consistency and quality that flows from the upstairs restaurant down into the cellar. Here, the focus remains on letting the ingredients speak, without pretension. Whether for a leisurely lunch or a full evening meal, the bistro offers a genuine taste of Oslo’s dining scene, rooted in tradition but never stuffy.
