The story
Blackbird occupies the Nielson Tower, the former terminal of the Philippines’ first commercial airport. Built in 1937, the building’s Art Deco lines and aviation heritage have been meticulously preserved. The original check-in area now houses a bar and lounge, the passenger terminal has become a grand oval grill room, and the former control tower offers an intimate private dining space. The result is a dining destination that feels both historic and fresh.
The main Grill Room is the heart of the restaurant. High ceilings and well-spaced tables keep it airy during the day, while evening brings soft mood lighting that highlights the Art Deco features. A dramatic spiral staircase leads up to the Cabin, the former control tower, with sweeping views of the Ayala Triangle gardens. For a more informal meal, the Garden & Terrace offers an open wooden deck and covered terrace, with two bars and a spacious lounge area. The Lounge & Bar, with its marble and brass bar and velvet-clad sofas, is a relaxed spot for cocktails before dinner.
Blackbird’s eclectic menu draws on the building’s aviation history, combining world classics with Contemporary Asian cooking. The all-day menu ranges from a nasi goreng to a classic Neapolitan pizza, steak frites, or fresh pasta with local seafood. At night, grilled meats and seafood sit alongside curries, fresh pastas, and indulgent homemade desserts. Weekend brunch takes a global approach, and afternoon tea is served with finger sandwiches, scones, and fine teas. The kitchen emphasizes warmth and flexibility, whether for a light snack, a formal business lunch, or a relaxed dinner.
This mix of heritage, design, and culinary ambition earned Blackbird a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026. The restaurant’s focus on the warmth of Filipino hospitality, paired with a setting that tells a story of Makati’s transformation, makes it a destination worth seeking out.
