The story

Pod Różą – Modern Cuisine in Kraków, Poland | Michelin Recommended

A Michelin-Recommended Address in the Old Town

Pod Różą has been defined by its own production and international influences for over twenty years. Located in Kraków’s oldest hotel, just off the Main Square, the restaurant earned a Michelin Recommended distinction for its precise, modern approach to cooking. The kitchen, led by Chef Mateusz Szul, delivers a tasting dinner in Fine Dining style that speaks to the scale of his abilities.

Chef Mateusz Szul

Szul took his first steps at Pod Różą, working alongside Chef Miłosz Grabowski. He is described as disciplined, creative, and a perfectionist who does not accept half measures. His cooking is modern and minimalistic, focused on taste and high-quality ingredients. He brings a contemporary touch to Polish traditions, with a strong emphasis on regional and seasonal products.

The Ambiance

The restaurant occupies a former courtyard under a glazed roof, with a room that overlooks Św. Tomasza Street. This intimate space, called the Garden, features a huge glass window that opens in summer, giving the impression of dining in a leafy alcove of the Old Town. It is fully air-conditioned, making it comfortable year-round. The tables themselves are individually designed in steel, bronze, and black oak, and the bar combines a black oak top with bronze panels.

The Cuisine

The kitchen’s own production is the backbone of the menu. A tasting lunch offers seven small Fine Dining dishes, a main course, and dessert for 99 PLN – a remarkable value. The six-course tasting menu (340 PLN) might begin with a Fine de Claire oyster with mignonette, followed by beef tartare with yolk and crispy onions, sea bass ceviche with candied and fermented citrus, goose bouillon with dumplings, slow-braised beef short rib, and a tarte tatin with smoked milk ice cream. A nine-course version (400 PLN) adds fried trout with butter sauce and sea buckthorn, and a rum baba. The Valentine’s Day menu features an eight-course progression including raviolo with egg yolk and white, truffle parmesan emulsion, and beef tenderloin with foie gras.

The Wine Program

Pod Różą’s wine list has been recognized by Wine Spectator as one of the richest in the world. The Wine Bar, set in a splendid Krakow-style gate, draws pedestrians in summer, while the Vinoteka in the 14th-century cellars offers over 300 varieties of Italian wine alongside cheeses and charcuterie. Wine pairings are available for the tasting menus, and the list is deep enough to satisfy any connoisseur.

With its confident modern cuisine, historic setting, and world-class wine program, Pod Różą is a destination that lives up to its Michelin nod.
