The story

Bomfim 1896, Alijó – Contemporary Dining at a Historic Port Estate

At the heart of the Douro Valley

Bomfim 1896 sits on the banks of the Douro River, just beside the village of Pinhão, at Quinta do Bomfim – the home of Dow’s Port since 1896 and a property tended by the Symington family for five generations. The restaurant’s name and spirit honour that lineage: a space that feels like an extension of the family kitchen, with large chimneys and the unmistakable aroma of wood-fired cooking.

An open kitchen, a living hearth

The kitchen is open to the dining room, giving diners a clear view of all the action. The centrepiece is a wood-fired stove and oven, where dishes take on a smoky, rustic character that defines the restaurant’s identity. This is not a stage set – it is a working hearth that recalls the traditional Douro kitchens where meals were cooked over fire and shared around the table.

Contemporary cuisine rooted in tradition

The menu revisits the region’s classic recipe book, reinterpreting familiar dishes to represent the best of the Douro and Portugal. The food is contemporary in execution but anchored in memory: the flavours of wood smoke, the generosity of a family table, the produce of the surrounding vineyards and terraced hillsides. The kitchen also accommodates vegetarian preferences, and the restaurant offers both air-conditioned indoor dining and outdoor seating with views of the river and the estate.

Wines from the family portfolio

The Symington family’s legacy is inseparable from the wines of the Douro. Bomfim 1896 pours a selection from the family’s own portfolio, including the legendary Dow’s Vintage Ports made from the Quinta’s vineyards, together with other Douro and Alentejo wines from the estate. Each glass tells a story of the same terroir visible from the restaurant windows.

A Michelin recommendation

The restaurant’s commitment to authenticity, quality and a sense of place earned it a Michelin recommendation. This recognition is a natural fit for a house that treats its guests like family, where the cooking is honest, the setting is deeply rooted, and the welcome is warm.
