The story
Perched on the cliffs of Alporchinhos in Armação de Pêra, Ocean takes its name and philosophy from the sea. For Chef Hans Neuner and his team, the restaurant is the result of years of exploration—a journey that began with Portuguese navigators setting sail for new worlds and continues today in the kitchen. The guiding principle is rediscovery: looking at familiar ingredients and traditions with fresh eyes.
The Atlantic Ocean serves as both backdrop and inspiration. Inside, the atmosphere is intimate and refined, with a passion for elevating Portuguese cuisine to the highest level. This commitment has earned the restaurant two Michelin stars, a recognition of its excellent cooking and the team’s dedication to creating memorable experiences.
The menu at Ocean is not a static list of dishes but a narrative. Each year, Chef Neuner and his team embark on a new expedition, tracing the footsteps of Portuguese history around the globe. The current menu, named Essence, represents a return to Portugal—a homecoming shaped by years of travel and discovery.
Essence is a tasting menu that celebrates seasonal ingredients and gives new life to the country’s most emblematic traditions. Dishes evolve with the tides, drawing from the sea’s bounty: percebes (goose barnacles) with green almonds and seaweed, high-sea shrimp with pumpkin and beurre noisette, and Algarve treasures like spider crab and sea cicada with cilantro. The menu also nods to Portuguese classics, such as a piri-piri quail with a warm tomato salad. A vegetarian version is available, and the wine pairings, curated by sommeliers João Wiborg and Marco Teixeira, are designed to complement the diversity of flavors. The restaurant serves a fixed tasting menu for dinner, Wednesday through Sunday.
The team at Ocean shares a joy in reimagining the fascination the ocean inspires. They search for the simplicity and purity that can be lost over time, bringing it back to the plate with precision. The kitchen’s philosophy is summed up in a quote from Chef Hans Neuner: “The real discovery does not begin in new places, but in seeing with new eyes.” This approach makes a meal at Ocean a genuine exploration of Portuguese seafood and its cultural roots.
