The story
The name says it all. Contradição is a deliberate break from the traditional restaurants of Bragança, a gastro bar that sets its own rules. Siblings Óscar and António Geadas—the “manos Geadas”—opened this space within the city’s medieval castle walls after a period of uncertainty. Their mission, as they put it, was to “valorize and preserve the identity and flavors of our region” without being bound by convention.
The result is a relaxed, welcoming restaurant where the cooking is precise and confident. The kitchen draws on the ingredients and culinary memory of Trás-os-Montes, but reinterprets them with modern technique and a light touch. Guests describe the food as having the “refinement of a Michelin-starred restaurant” yet served in an unpretentious atmosphere. That balance—between ambition and approachability—is precisely what earned Contradição a Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide, a recognition of good quality, good value cooking.
Desserts are a particular point of pride. The team treats them as a “culmination of a sublime meal,” combining textures and flavors like caramel, vanilla, and almond, or ruby chocolate with pear and port wine sorbet. Each plate is presented with care, but the mood remains informal.
Inside the castle walls, the dining room is intimate and contemporary, with outdoor seating for warmer days. The brothers are present, often moving between the kitchen and the front of house, ensuring that every guest feels looked after. For anyone seeking a modern taste of northern Portugal without the formality, Contradição delivers exactly that—a contradiction worth seeking out.
