The story

Kappo, Cascais: Japanese Omakase by Chef Tiago Penão – Michelin Recommended

A Return to Intention

On Avenida Emídio Navarro in Cascais, Kappo has re-emerged. The space is deliberately small – twelve seats per service – and the rhythm is unhurried. “There are places where time slows down,” the restaurant’s own words explain. “Where every gesture is intentional, and memory is celebrated through simple, pure, true creations.” This is the philosophy that guides the house: a Japanese omakase experience stripped of everything superfluous, leaving only the essential.

Chef Tiago Penão

At the counter stands Chef Tiago Penão. “With precise hands and a serene soul,” writes the restaurant, he leads the journey through Japan. His cooking is described as “contained, luminous, deep” – a balance of technique and delicacy, built between the fire and the silence. Every dish is composed before your eyes, honouring the origin of each ingredient and the season that brought it.

The Art of Welcoming

Kappo’s spirit is rooted in omotenashi – the Japanese art of caring without ostentation. “It doesn’t impose itself, doesn’t explain itself; it is felt,” the team notes. This discreet presence runs from the kitchen to the dining room, from the first moment to the last. The meal is built around eleven moments, “eleven pauses in time,” each one a meditation on the ingredient and the craft.

A Michelin‑Recommended Address

The restaurant’s quiet precision has earned it a place in the Michelin guide, with a Recommended distinction for 2026. It is a recognition that aligns with the restaurant’s own standards: a deep respect for Japanese cuisine, for the produce, and for the guest. The experience is limited to lunch on Saturdays and Sundays, and dinner Wednesday through Sunday – reservations are recommended, as the twelve seats fill quickly.

In Cascais, Kappo offers a rare moment of focus: a counter where the cook’s hands speak, and the only thing that matters is the meal itself.
