The story
On the outskirts of Estremoz, along the Estrada Nacional, Legacy Winery Restaurant is the dining arm of Herdade das Servas, a family wine estate whose roots reach back to 1667. The restaurant earned a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026, a recognition that speaks to the precision and sense of place found on every plate.
At the stove is Chef Ricardo Gonçalves. His path to the Alentejo was not a straight line. He began cooking in the Portuguese Air Force, where discipline and respect for ingredients took hold. Formal training followed, then years teaching, and stints in hotels that sharpened his technique. At Grupo Avillez, he ran Café Lisboa and learned that each dish carries intention and memory. Later, as a supervisor at Grupo Capricciosa, he built a broader view of the kitchen. But the Alentejo called him back — to the land, to the roots, to a cuisine built on time, silence, and truth.
The result is a style of contemporary cooking that honours the Alentejo's produce. Gonçalves works with the estate's own wines and local ingredients, crafting dishes that are technically assured and emotionally resonant. He cooks, as he puts it, like someone telling stories — because food, he believes, is memory served at the table.
The restaurant itself is part of the wider Herdade das Servas estate, where wine tourism is central. Guests can explore the vineyards, learn about the terroir, and taste the wines that flow naturally into the dining room. The setting is relaxed but considered, with outdoor seating for warm days and air conditioning for the Alentejo summer.
Legacy Winery Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, closed Wednesdays and Thursdays. It offers private parties, a wine bar, and counter dining for those who want to watch the kitchen at work. Parking is ample, and the space is wheelchair accessible.
