The story
Origens is the realisation of a long-held dream for Chef Gonçalo Queiroz and his wife Eugénia. This family-run restaurant, opened in 2016, sits within Évora’s historic centre, a minute’s walk from the Roman Temple. With just twenty-four seats, the space is intimate — an informal Alentejo bistrô where sharing and lingering over a glass of wine feel natural. Reservations are strongly advised.
The kitchen’s mission is to promote the products of the Alentejo region, presented with care and a contemporary sensibility. The menu is seasonal and constantly changing, driven by what nature offers. Classic and nearly forgotten recipes are researched and reimagined, staying true to their identity while gaining a modern touch. Dishes such as Farinheira à Brás and Figos com Presunto de porco Alentejano — both seen in the restaurant’s gallery — exemplify this approach, bringing local ingredients to the fore.
Alentejo is known for its wines, and Origens treats them as an integral part of the experience. The wine list offers a journey through the region’s diversity, with a focus on blends and a particular nod to the white wines that have been gaining prominence.
The restaurant’s commitment to quality and authenticity has earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026. Beyond the dining room, Origens offers cooking classes, wine tastings, and catering, allowing guests to take a piece of the experience home.
Sustainability runs through the restaurant’s ethos. The team works with local producers and cooks with the seasons, minimising waste and supporting the regional economy. Origens also engages in social activities, from donations to fundraising for children’s causes, believing that good food and good citizenship go hand in hand.
