The story
Set directly on the sands of Praia do Ancão, within the protected Ria Formosa Natural Park, 2 Passos enjoys one of the most dramatic seascapes in the Algarve. The restaurant has been part of this stretch of coast for more than thirty years, but its current incarnation—a thoughtful renovation that respects the surrounding dunes and estuary—feels entirely fresh. “In full harmony with nature,” as the team describes it, the dining room and terrace open onto the endless horizon of the Atlantic, where the only sounds are waves and the occasional seabird.
The kitchen is rooted in Portuguese and Mediterranean traditions, with a clear focus on the sea. Fish and shellfish are sourced daily from local markets, and the menu changes accordingly. You might find tiger shrimp prepared Passos style, a generous T-bone steak for two, a lobster casserole named after João, or simply grilled squid. Alongside the catch of the day, the kitchen turns out Algarvian “tapas”, salads, and locally sourced meats. Desserts and ice cream are made in-house by the 2 Passos chefs. The wine list, curated by João Clara, pairs naturally with the coastal fare.
For its consistent quality and singular setting, 2 Passos has been awarded a Michelin Recommended distinction. It is a place where the food is as honest as the landscape—unpretentious, deeply flavourful, and inextricably tied to its place on the edge of the Ria Formosa.
