The story
Horta, located on the Lido promenade in Funchal, brings a straightforward philosophy to the table: da horta à mesa – from garden to plate. The kitchen focuses on local, seasonal produce, with vegetables taking the lead. Comfort and sustainability go hand in hand here, resulting in a menu that feels both nourishing and inventive.
The restaurant earned a Michelin Recommended distinction within its first year of opening (2024) and continues to hold it – a quiet testament to the quality of what comes out of the kitchen.
Chef Afonso Nogueira is the hand behind the burners. He works vegetables in a distinct way, putting them at the centre of every creation. His approach is sustainable, flavour-driven, and built on respect for the ingredient. The result is a cuisine that is light yet satisfying, and well-suited to the island's temperate climate.
The interior is bright and clean, with natural wood furnishings and warm, point lighting that makes the room feel inviting. Outside, a discreet terrace is tucked among greenery, offering a peaceful spot for lunch or an early dinner. The bar area is generous, with a striking counter that encourages guests to linger over cocktails and snacks throughout the afternoon and early evening.
Whether you come for a full dinner or just a drink and a small bite, Horta delivers a calm, unpretentious experience that lets the food speak for itself.
