The story
On the Avenida dos Descobrimentos in Lagos, Avenida restaurant brings a refined, effortlessly welcoming approach to dining. The kitchen is led by Chef Roeland Klein, who discovered his passion for cooking while working alongside his father at the one-Michelin-starred Hermitage in the Netherlands. A holiday trip to Lagos made him fall in love with the town, and he decided to make it his home. Today, his menu is a clear expression of that journey: globally inspired cuisine rooted in Portuguese ingredients.
Chef Klein’s cooking is grounded in technique and restraint. The menu reads like a map of thoughtful pairings – scallop with passionfruit, cockles, and fennel; crab with celeriac, hazelnut, and green apple; foie gras with Joselito ham, chicken skin, and caviar. There is a salt-crust catch of the day, a nod to the coast, and a selection of organic matured beef cuts, including a Japanese Wagyu A5. The six-course tasting menu (90€ per person) offers a curated journey through these flavours, with a wine pairing option crafted by Head Sommelier Joana Reis.
Joana Reis, named Sommelier / Wine Director of the Year in 2024, oversees a wine list of over 1,000 references from 15 countries. The atmosphere is smart casual – no beachwear, and children aged 12 or older are welcome. The dining room is air-conditioned, with outdoor seating available, and the space is wheelchair accessible. For those looking for a lighter moment, the rooftop Apéro offers live music and sunset views.
Avenida’s consistent quality earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction – a natural fit for a restaurant that balances international ambition with a clear sense of place. Whether for lunch on Fridays and Saturdays, dinner every evening, or a leisurely breakfast, the experience is one of unpretentious polish.
