The story
When Canalha opened in 2023, its ambition was simple: to be a neighbourhood restaurant. Positioned beside the MAAT museum in Lisbon’s Alcântara district, it quickly became something larger – a place where the city’s pulse meets the warmth of daily cooking. The concept, led by chef João Rodrigues with resident chef Lívia Orofino, is deliberately straightforward: Portuguese in content, Iberian in form. There are no revivals, no rigid concepts – just a kitchen that is emotionally Portuguese, openly Iberian, and unashamedly focused on national produce.
The dining room is built around the relationship between the visible kitchen, the counter, and the tables. Each day, the freshest ingredients from the display case are handwritten onto a slate – the menu changes with what’s good that morning. This immediacy gives Canalha its irreverent yet comfortable character. The success of the original location soon led to a summer outpost at Sublime Comporta, extending the project’s seasonal reach.
Canalha’s approach earned it a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2026, a nod to its consistent, good-value cooking. It’s a place where Portuguese cuisine feels both grounded and generous – a genuine Lisbon neighbourhood spot that now belongs to the city.
