The story

O Frade, Lisbon: Traditional Portuguese Cooking with Michelin Recognition

A Family Affair from Alentejo

O Frade is rooted in the Alentejo region, where generations of cooks, winemakers and tavern keepers have shaped its identity. “Saber receber, comer, beber e sentar à mesa esquecendo que o tempo existe” – knowing how to welcome, eat, drink and sit at the table forgetting time exists – is the philosophy that runs through the restaurant. That spirit earned O Frade a Michelin Recommended distinction, recognizing its honest, unfussy approach to traditional Portuguese cuisine.

The Menu

The menu reads like a love letter to Portuguese home cooking. Starters include Lingueirão à Bulhão Pato (razor clams in garlic and coriander), a delicate Tártaro de Novilho (beef tartare), and Ovos Cremosos com Espargos (creamy eggs with asparagus). Main courses stay true to the classics: Arroz de Pato à Frade (duck rice), Carne de Porco Preto à Alentejana (Iberian pork with clams), and Rabo de Boi Estufado (braised oxtail). Seafood lovers will find Barriga de Atum (tuna belly with onion compote and orange) and Lula Alhada (garlic squid). Even the bread – slow-fermented, served with Alentejo olive oil and Azorean butter – sets the tone.

The Wine List: Talha and Beyond

Wine is central to the O Frade experience. The restaurant champions vinho de talha (amphora wines), a tradition that dates back to Roman times in Alentejo. Their own label, Talha de Frades, appears in both red and white, alongside a curated selection from across Portugal – from Vinho Verde to the Azores. It’s a list that invites exploration, with plenty by the glass and a notable focus on indigenous grape varieties.

A Space for Gathering

The restaurant in Belém, on Calçada da Ajuda, is designed for long, unhurried meals. There’s a counter for solo diners, outdoor seating, and space for private parties. The atmosphere is warm and unhurried – a place where the hours slip by without notice. With its Michelin Recommended status, O Frade proves that the best Portuguese cooking is often the most personal.
