The story
Since opening its doors in 1995, A Carvalheira has built a singular reputation within Portuguese gastronomy, becoming a proud representative of the Alto Minho region. The restaurant is the domain of brothers José and Ricardo Gomes, who carry forward a legacy rooted in the hands of Maria Teresa Gomes. As the restaurant puts it, “N’A Carvalheira todas as receitas têm um segredo: a mão de Maria Teresa Gomes”—all recipes hold a secret: the hand of Maria Teresa Gomes.
The philosophy is disarmingly simple: “Não temos segredos. É o carinho que há na casa, pelos produtos e pela confecção dos pratos que faz o sucesso da nossa cozinha.” There are no secrets, they say—just the care for ingredients and preparation that makes their kitchen succeed. This commitment to honest, traditional cooking earned the restaurant a Michelin Recommended distinction, a fitting recognition for a kitchen that lets the flavours of the Minho region speak for themselves.
In 2014, A Carvalheira moved to a new, larger space that offers better conditions for couples, families, and groups alike. What hasn’t changed is the dedication. The menu reads like a map of local bounty: starters of alheira with vegetables, fava beans with smoked meats, cod’s roe, and cured ham; main courses include bacalhau com broa (cod with cornbread), arroz de pato (duck rice), roasted kid goat, Pernil no forno, and the hearty Sarrabulho. Desserts stay true to Portuguese tradition with Leite Creme, Pera Borrachona, and the classic Pudim Abade Priscos.
The restaurant also takes pride in its wine cellar—a selection of the most perfumed nectars to accompany the aromas of the Minho. It is a place where traditional Portuguese cuisine is not just preserved, but lived with warmth and generosity.
