The story
In Leça da Palmeira, just north of Porto, Cibû Restaurante offers a thoughtful take on contemporary Portuguese cuisine. Under the leadership of Chef Hugo Portela, the kitchen draws from the traditions of his native Trás-os-Montes, translating them into dishes that balance sophistication with a deep respect for local ingredients.
The space itself is described as welcoming and refined, with soft lighting and a décor that blends rustic and modern elements. It sets the stage for what the team calls a sensory journey—one that begins with familiar aromas and builds through carefully composed plates. The restaurant’s commitment to seasonality and regional produce earned it a place among the Michelin Recommended restaurants, a recognition that aligns with its focus on quality and authenticity.
Chef Hugo Portela’s path to the kitchen was not a straight line. Originally trained in Environmental Health, his passion for cooking was ignited by local gastronomy and family traditions. After building experience in top restaurants and luxury hotels both in Portugal and abroad, he created Cibû as a space to honour his roots. The menu reflects this, with dishes that surprise through their refined simplicity and depth of flavour.
Guest reviews highlight starters like the bolinho de arroz, croquettes, and a chicken liver toast that evokes childhood memories in a modern form, followed by a standout sea bass and a peach dessert. The service is described as attentive, and the wine list is carefully selected to complement the food.
Cibû is open for dinner Wednesday through Saturday, and for lunch on Sundays. The restaurant also features outdoor seating, free Wi-Fi, and can host private events.
