The story
At DOP, Chef Rui Paula brings a contemporary approach to Portuguese cuisine, working from a kitchen he describes as dynamic, bold, and creative. The restaurant occupies two floors within the Palácio das Artes in Porto’s historic centre, with a capacity of ninety guests. Small buffer walls between tables create a sense of privacy even in the larger space, while a terrace with bar service opens onto Largo de São Domingos. The atmosphere is described as relaxed and informal, suited to both intimate dinners and celebrations.
The menu is cheerful, colourful, and fragrant, with fluid suggestions that range widely across fish, seafood, and more traditional meats, soups, and pastas. Regional products—fresh and dried fruit, cheese, salads—feature prominently, and spices add a touch of originality. Beyond the à la carte, Chef Paula offers two tasting menus, ‘Memory’ and ‘Sea’, each available with wine pairing, as well as an Executive Menu served at lunch from Tuesday to Friday.
Wine has always been a fundamental pillar of Rui Paula’s restaurants. DOP’s wine list is precise and extensive, with hundreds of high-quality references from wine regions around the world. It has been distinguished multiple times by Wine Spectator, including the “2013 Best National Absolute Wine List” and the “2014 Best Award of Excellence.” The sommeliers test each pairing in detail to find the best suggestions.
The team—encompassing kitchen, dining room, and administration—is guided by creativity, commitment, and precision, principles that have long accompanied Chef Paula. The kitchen’s constant search for new techniques and pairings produces what they call an ethno-emotional cuisine, deeply linked to cultural roots yet without geographical limits to creation and influence. Simplicity, they say, emerges as the ultimate step of sophistication.
DOP’s recognition by the Michelin Guide as Recommended reflects the quality of this contemporary dining experience in Porto.
