The story
From the moment you cross the doors of Tokkotai in Porto, you are invited on a journey that connects Tokyo, São Paulo, and Porto. This collision of cultures yields a contemporary Japanese menu that sheds fresh light on traditional techniques. The kitchen works with the freshest fish, building unique textures and an explosion of flavours fused in ways you haven’t tasted before.
Tokkotai earned a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026, a nod to its inventive approach and consistent quality. The restaurant’s counter dining and outdoor seating make it a versatile spot for both lunch and dinner in the heart of Porto’s Rua do Comércio do Porto.
The menu is built around two tasting experiences: the Chef’s Seasonal Selection (€75) and the Tokkotai (€90), which highlights chef and house favourites. Cold starters include a White Fish, Octopus and Shrimp Ceviche, Tuna Tartar with Avocado, and Spicy Tuna Cannoli. Hot starters range from Grilled Scallops with chlorophyll oil, honey and smoked olive oil to Crispy Soft-Shell Crab Bao with guacamole.
Sashimi and nigiri are central, with traditional cuts like salmon, tuna, scallop, and Wagyu A5, alongside truffled and flambé variations. Specialties include Salmon with Truffled Quail Egg and Wagyu A5 with Foie Gras and Black Truffle. The Tokkotai Sashimi and Tokkotai Nigiri platters offer a curated selection.
Hot dishes include Grilled Octopus with mushroom rice, Wagyu A5 Steak with Asian rice, and Black Cod with Miso and Yasai vegetables. Desserts like Matcha Chiffon Cake and Childhood Memory – cheese ice cream with guava cream and yuzu lemon meringue – round out the meal.
Tokkotai’s interior is sleek and modern, with counter seating for a front-row view of the kitchen. Private parties and takeaway are also available. Whether you come for a quick lunch or an evening tasting, the restaurant delivers a confident, original take on Japanese cuisine in Porto.
