The story
At Vinha Boutique Hotel in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the Douro from Porto, Vinha Restaurante has earned a Michelin star for its refined Portuguese cuisine. It is the fine-dining flagship of the hotel, overseen by chef Henrique Sá Pessoa, one of Portugal’s most celebrated chefs.
Chef Sá Pessoa’s career began in Lisbon, then took him to the Pennsylvania Institute of Culinary Arts, and to kitchens in London and Australia. He opened acclaimed restaurants including Alma in Lisbon (two Michelin stars since 2018), ARCA in Amsterdam, and JOIA in London. In 2022, he joined Vinha Boutique Hotel to direct its culinary offerings. He built a team from the ground up, bringing together professionals united by a shared pursuit of excellence.
“The team is young, highly motivated and composed of exceptional professionals,” the restaurant notes. “All are united by a common goal: to create lasting memories at the table, through a singular and refined culinary journey.” This dedication was recognised with a Michelin star, awarded for “a daily commitment to precision, innovation and respect for flavour.”
The menu is a tasting format, changing with the seasons to highlight Portuguese ingredients. An extensive wine list complements the meal. The dining room is elegant and modern, with service that is both attentive and relaxed. Lunch and dinner are served, with amenities including valet parking and wheelchair access.
Vinha Restaurante is a destination for Portuguese gastronomy at its highest level, guided by a chef who continues to elevate the country’s culinary reputation.
