The story
In Vila Real, a century-old railway warehouse has been given a new life. Cais da Villa occupies this historic building, once a goods depot for the train station, and transforms it into a space that balances memory and modernity. Turismo de Portugal has recognized it as a point of interest for tourism in the Douro and Alto Douro region. The result of a careful rehabilitation, the interior is elegant and comfortable, while the large outdoor esplanade invites guests to linger on sunny days.
The kitchen is led by Chef Daniel Gomes, who builds his menus around local, seasonal produce. His cooking draws deeply on the gastronomic traditions of the Douro and Trás-os-Montes regions, adding creative, personal touches. The restaurant’s Mediterranean cuisine is expressed through a la carte dining, a wine bar serving tapas and steaks, and a thoughtfully curated wine cellar that gives pride of place to the wines of the Douro and Porto. From an executive lunch menu to a multi-course Chef’s Suggestion, the emphasis is on quality ingredients and clear, confident flavours.
Cais da Villa has been recognized as a Recommended Restaurant by the Michelin Guide, a distinction it proudly renewed for 2026. The restaurant has also earned praise from publications like Wine magazine, which called it the “best restaurant in the interior,” and from guests who note the “absolutely Michelin-quality food at an affordable price.” It is a place where the warmth of the region meets a refined, unhurried approach to dining.
