The story
Mare in Bucharest centers its modern bistro cuisine around calm, gallery-side service and seasonal simplicity. Visitors arrive for the acclaimed collections, but stay for the unpretentious kitchen and the quiet rhythm of the ground floor café. The MARe Foundation launched this five floor complex in October 2018 as Romania’s first private art museum in over a century. Roger Akoury established the institution to house more than one thousand works spanning historical avant garde movements to current video installations. Curator Gregory Lang arranges vintage photographs alongside minimalist copper floor pieces and large scale monochromes.
Art lovers and remote workers gather at the counter managed by Beans & Dots to escape the gallery noise. The space operates with a deliberate pace, serving espresso and loose leaf tea throughout the day. The kitchen prepares a rotating selection of light meals that respect the building’s intellectual atmosphere. Sandwiches arrive on dense sourdough, accompanied by house made spreads and crisp vegetables. Desserts lean toward restrained sweetness, often featuring dark chocolate ganache or poached fruit reductions. The bistro fare avoids heavy sauces, favoring textures that do not distract from the surrounding exhibitions.
Visitors climb to the third floor library to browse art monographs and exhibition catalogs before heading to the rooftop terrace. The outdoor seating overlooks the tree lined streets of the Primăverii district, capturing late afternoon sunlight on neighboring facades. Summer evenings draw guests who bring sketchbooks or paperbacks to read while the breeze moves through the metal railings. Guided tours pass through these levels twice daily, connecting visitors to the active educational department. The 12.5 rating from Gault&Millau reflects this balance of visual rigor and culinary restraint.
