The story

Restoran Šaran Belgrade: A Century of Danube Seafood Tradition

Roots on the Danube

Restoran Šaran in Belgrade has built its reputation on decades of careful seafood preparation along the Zemun quay. Fisherman Vićentije Vukotić opened the original tavern more than a hundred years ago in the ground floor of his home. His traditional fish soup recipe remains the foundation of the kitchen today. Massive wooden tables and sun-warmed walls frame the dining room, creating a space that honors both river traditions and contemporary comfort.

The Chef and the Kitchen

Nenad Lučić has guided the kitchen since 2004, treating every plate as a disciplined craft rather than a routine task. He insists on top-quality ingredients before exploring any technique or seasoning. His background as an active fisherman on the Danube, Sava, and Tisza rivers directly informs how he handles river catch and imported seafood. Live tambourine performances fill the evenings, grounding the modern service in local cultural rhythm.

Signature Dishes and Recognition

Gault&Millau awarded the establishment fourteen points for its precise handling of delicate proteins and bold flavor pairings. The tuna carpaccio arrives chilled with high-grade olive oil and citrus, while the monkfish relies on simple oil and garlic to highlight natural sweetness. Smoked carp pâté and hearty fish stews anchor the menu alongside creative desserts like a hybrid Crème Suzette that merges French pastry methods with Mediterranean accents.
