The story
Restoran Kano in Kragujevac offers a focused Southeast Asian cuisine that marries Filipino heritage with Cypriot hospitality in the quiet streets of the city. Milan Tanjga, an ASI-certified sommelier, opened the restaurant in March 2018 alongside his wife, whose family origins lie in the Philippines. Drawing on fifteen years of hospitality management in Cyprus and travels through Thailand, he constructed a menu that approaches these profiles as home cooking rather than haute cuisine. The aim is to present Southeast Asian flavors to Šumadija while adapting them to a regional mentality. This measured strategy results in plates that prioritize clarity, allowing techniques like steaming and quick frying to define the character of each dish.
The spring rolls showcase a crispy shell wrapping cabbage and green beans in homemade dough, finished with a sweet-sour sauce and chopped chili for heat. The Kano rib appears as a succulent cut paired with creamy sweet potato mash and a rich demi-glace that anchors the composition. Poultry options include the orange chicken, which arrives breaded and glazed with fresh orange and honey alongside steamed jasmine rice. Sweet finishes offer the Banoffee cheesecake, layering cream cheese and banana over a dark biscuit crust, while the Maha cake absorbs coconut milk for a soft, tropical texture. This consistency in balance recently earned the kitchen a Gault&Millau rating of 12.
Located in a residential neighborhood, the space maintains a minimalist ambiance that directs attention toward the food. Milan Tanjga places strong emphasis on wine culture, organizing educational workshops and curating a list designed to complement the Asian-Mediterranean fusion. Knowledgeable staff guide diners through the selection, explaining pairings with ease. The environment feels welcoming and unpretentious, supporting dishes such as the Cyprus-style meatballs spiced with cinnamon and mint or the grilled sardines prepared boneless. The combination of thoughtful service and a well-considered wine list rounds out an experience defined by discreet confidence.
